Renmark High School

TRANSITION

Last week all of our Year 6 and 7 students visited our Come and Try session for Term 4. We love having our future students visit and this time we could already see that they had become more familiar with the High School. We asked the students if they had any questions for us, below are their questions and the answers. Our full time social Worker, Alicia will continue visiting all the primary school this term, during these visits she will answer and questions your students might still have.

Year 6

Nataya

Do you get to look after the animals at the farm?

The short answer is yes. Agriculture is one of the subjects that we offer at school and as a part of this program, your will learn about animal care. You might not be in the Ag class when you first start school, but it is a subject that you can choose right up to Year 12.

Emme

When do we find out our care groups?

When you come to the Transition full days at the end of the term (year 6s on Monday and Tuesday of Week 8), you will be in your Care Group for 2022 and you will get to meet your teacher for next year. Hopefully by now you have returned your information sheet to the school where you nominated student who you would like to be with next year. RHS uses this information to put together the groups, you will have at least one of the students you put on your sheet,

What will the Year 7s do next year?

‘how long has the school been running transitions for?

We have been working with our four feeder primary schools running transitions for a very long time, but now we do visits across Term 2, 3 and 4. We have been running transition like the ones you have attended this for about 10 years. We are really proud of the work that the four Renmark Primary Schools and the High School have done to build a cohesive program that supports all of our future students. We are always looking for ways to improve so if you have any more suggestions, feel free to email them to dl.0794.info@schools.sa.edu.au

Why can’t we use our phones?

Renmark High School has a range of computers and devices that students can use for their learning, so we just don’t need to have our phones at school, they can be a distraction. We provide phones for students to use to make contact home in the Student Services Office near the Library and parents can call us any time to pass messages to you in the school day. As a part of our pastoral care program we provide lessons and information on cyber safety and making positive online choices, so we will talk to you and help you to be safe online, but we would rather you use your social media accounts at home, where your parents can monitor your interactions.

What do we need for high school?

This is a great question, and the short answer is not too much. You will need a school bag, lunch box, hat, drink bottle and pencil case. School uniform is available to be purchased through Tri-State Graphics and Yates Menswear. In the summer school holidays you will receive a letter in the post explaining when you can come into the school to pick up your book packs. We provide all the books you need and some basic stationery, it is a good idea to also buy your own highlighters and coloured pencils.

The short answer is yes. Agriculture is one of the subjects that we offer at school and as a part of this program, your will learn about animal care. You might not be in the Ag class when you first start school, but it is a subject that you can choose right up to Year 12.

Bedirhan

Do we have PE every week?

Yes, you will have PE all year. During your PE lessons you will also do some theory work, in particular, we use these lessons to teach the Child Protection Curriculum.

Armaan

Do we get to do cricket?

During PE you will get to learn about and practice a range of skills and sports, cricket is one of these.

Gemma,

Is there casual days?

The SRC will run a number of casual days over the year, these collect funds for charities and school projects. Usually they have a theme, like ‘Wear it Purple’, Wear Yellow for R U OK day, or Sports Colours Day. We set up the SRC early in the year, each class has representatives, so if you’re would like to be involved in organizing these events you can join the SRC.

Ebony

Am I going to get lost?

Probably not, while the high school is larger than your primary school, you will very quickly learn your way around. During the first few weeks of school additional staff are available in the yard during each lesson change and break, there job is to help new students find their classes. On the first day, your care group teacher will take you on a tour to make sure you know where to go. There is also a map in the front of your school diary. We find that students are very comfortable finding their way around the school within the first week of high school.

Year 7

Ben

How many cooking lessons are there?

You will get to do Food Technology as a subject during the year. You get to try every subject for at least a term. When you get into year 9, you can choose to do Food Technology for the whole year.

Aniela

Will we be able to sit anywhere in the classroom?

Sometimes, initially it is likely that your teachers will have a seating plan for you. This helps you feel comfortable and familiar with each classroom. You will get to choose where you sit sometimes, particularly in Care Group and for different class activities.

Makayla

Can I catch a bus home from school?

School buses fun across the region. If you live 5km from Renmark High School you are eligible to catch a school bus. Bus application forms were included in the enrolment pack, but you can pick up another one from the RHS office if you need.

Emily

How do you remember where to go?

On the first day you will get a timetable. Your Care Group Teacher will make sure that you understand how to read it. In Year 7 and 8 most of your lessons will be with your Care Group. Your timetable is available on Daymap so there is also an electronic copy that your family will have access to all the time as well. If for some reason you leave your diary at home and you don’t have your timetable, you can get another one at the Student Services Office.
