Welcome to our Exchange Students
Last week we were pleased to be able to welcome fifteen international students, thirteen who are from Hachioji Japan who are here on a study tour until later this week and two students who are here with us for this term, Valerie from Germany, and Liam from France.
The presence of international students in our school enhances the education experience for all students. International students complement Renmark High School’s existing cultural and linguistic diversity. They bring their own knowledge, cultures, values and languages into our school, enriching the school community and creating new ways to learn about the world.
Intercultural understanding is a general capability described in the Australian Curriculum. It involves ‘learning about and engaging with diverse cultures in ways that recognise commonalities and difference, create connections with others and cultivate mutual respect’.
Exchanges and study tours provide valuable opportunities for students to experience first-hand the languages and cultures of a different country and way of life. We support these exchanges and study tours at Renmark High School as we believe that our students should have opportunities to interact with people from different countries and cultures and to reflect on these interactions as a part of their learning.

Renmark High School has welcomed 13 students from Hachioji Junior High School, which caters for 1500 students on the outskirts of Tokyo, in Japan. They arrived last Wednesday night and were greeted by Mrs Tassios and 13 excited host families who have opened up their homes for these students for the duration of the 10-day program.
With the support of their teacher, Mr Shintaro Namihira and their translator Ms Haruna Sekiguchi they have participated in a tour of Renmark with Mr Elliott and Ms Bower, enjoyed improving their English skills with Ms Bower, experiencing some Australian cuisine with Ms Riar and Mrs Hooper, as well as developing their relationship skills with their buddies through activities with Mr Branford.
The Japanese students have also accompanied their buddy students to regular lessons to gain an insight into what is feels like to be a part of a typical high school class in Australia.
Over the weekend, students participated in a range of different activities with their host families, watching a range of different sports, spending time down the river and kangaroo spotting!
A highlight to date, was a visit to St. Joseph’s School, where the Japanese students taught the two Year 5/6 classes how to put make some fantastic origami creations and performed a wonderful song in Japanese at the end of the session.
With a range of excursions off site for the remainder of the week, we hope our guests will enjoy a further taste of Australian culture and lifestyle.
We look forward to hearing more stories of our exchange of cultures this Thursday evening as we farewell the students with a dinner celebration before their return to Japan on Friday morning.

Snow Trip
During the second week of the schools holidays, 24 senior students took off to Mount Hotham for the 2019 RHS Snow Trip. After a slow start due to a variety of reasons (bus break down, bus accident and extreme weather) the group had a great week, with many laughs and long lasting memories. To ensure the experience was even more enjoyable we were fortunate to have snow fall most evenings, providing us with fresh snow for the morning ski activities.
Each day consisted of a scheduled snowboard lesson with Mt Hotham staff, before the group explored other parts of the mountain while developing their skills. Every student chipped in and assisted with the cooking and other duties around the lodge before relaxing by the fire telling some stories about the day and playing games.
This year’s group picked it really quick even though it was the first time in the snow for the majority. This enabled them to explore more of the mountain and even attempt a few jumps. As the week went by there were a few sore and tired students but overall it was another great trip with the lodge manager praising the students for their efforts and attitude.
Bring on 2020!

Maddy finished 2nd in her 50m Butterfly and 50m Backstroke.

More Snow Highlights
Last week was a particularly musical time for our school, with a couple of live performances and opportunities provided for our students and staff.
On Thursday the cast of ’The Sapphires’ performed a pop-up outdoor performance at lunchtime. Students and staff were entertained by the harmonies of the talented Singers, accompanied by their charismatic Guitarist and Drummer. The Guitarist strummed his Guitar as the Musicians wandered outside and by the time they arrived at the performance space, quite an audience had gathered. It was great to see so many people enjoying listening to and appreciating live music. A big thank you to the generous performers! We appreciated them sharing their talents with us. I also thank Nicole John and Rebecca Farrant, from Country Arts, for coordinating this special event.
On Friday, the Adelaide Youth Orchestra’s Wind Quintet visited our Year 8 class. They demonstrated their instruments and spoke with our students about their love of playing musical instruments. While listening to them perform, their Conductor (Bryan Griffiths) asked our students to imagine the picture that the music created in their minds After the performance some students described the picture they saw and we were all amazed at how close these pictures were to the intended stories the composer wanted to tell! Music is such a powerful communicator of sound, message and image! Students also did a musical jigsaw (putting together a sound puzzle instead of a picture puzzle), made sounds using straws and a couple of our students even played a trumpet made out of a garden hose! The visit from the quintet and their teachers was a big encouragement for our Year 8 students who will begin learning a brass, woodwind or rhythm section instrument this week.
Following our Year 8 lesson, the quintet remained at school and participated in our school band rehearsal, led by Mr Geddie. What a great opportunity for our Musicians to meet and play with other like-minded Musicians.
I thank Lexi Buxton, Orchestra and Schools Tour Coordinator, for bringing her team to The Riverland and for her ongoing support of our Music Program.

Hi everyone, firstly welcome back to Term 3 – lots happening this term and I am really surprised at how quick this year is going.
I have been away at a state conference held in Adelaide. Over 300 Pastoral Care Workers (Chaplains) came together for 4 days for training, encouragement, fun and meeting new people and hearing some outstanding speakers. In our spare time some of us walked on the beach to Glenelg and back to our accommodation. It was so beautiful really early in the morning with the freezing wind, hearing the waves crash and just feeling so alive; a small thing but it impacted the beginning of each day for me hugely.
I came into school on Friday morning and as I was walking past the music room I heard some amazing music loud and strong – mainly trumpets. So I went into the music room and asked the Instrumental teacher if I could stay and listen. There were Year 8’s and others playing different instruments and also the Adelaide Youth Orchestra Wind Quintet were playing with our students. They made some fantastic music together and it was lovely hearing our students playing along. Well done everyone!!
Have a wonderful week, keep smiling and say hello to someone – they might even say hello back. Cheers Pammy PCW
