We acknowledge that we are on the land of the First People of the Murray and Mallee.
We pay our respects to the Elders both past and present and honour the laws and customs that cross this traditional country, the ancestors who taught and still teach the knowledge that is embedded forever with the Aboriginal people today.

Year 7 into HS – Continuity of Learning Program
Last week we organised a day for the year 8/9 teachers to meet with the 6/7 teachers from our primary schools to workshop with our literacy consultant Dr Rosie Kerin. Teachers discussed Literacy instruction across year 6-9 and began planning what that will look like ready for students in 2022. It was great to hear from the primary and high school perspectives and discuss how to create seamless transitions for students.
Student Free Day
During our recent Student Free Day teachers were involved in exploring classroom observations: Why? What? and How? We looked at the benefits of deprivatising practice, owning your professional growth, reference to the Australian Performance Standards for Teachers and the range of department tools to support these processes. SSOs attended training on skills for assessing, managing, and responding to risk behaviour, focusing on verbal de-escalation, prevention, and early intervention.
Parent Interview Reminders
Again, I would like to strongly encourage your attendance at the upcoming student, parent, teacher interviews (see details in this newsletter). These interviews are a great chance for teachers, students and their parents/caregivers to discuss student achievement, progress and goal setting for the remainder of the year. Interviews are not only for students who aren't progressing as well as expected, they are just as valuable to discuss the learning and skill development of students who are already performing to a high standard. We offer these interviews in term 3 to give time for students to put new goals and actions in place to improve results during the remainder of semester two. Use the online booking system now to reserve your preferred time slots.
Student Self Care
It is the end of Term 3 and, with only about 9 weeks to go until the last exam, the next few weeks are an essential time for year 12 students. It is important to develop a good study plan, making the most of the time remaining, and taking the opportunity to work with teachers to assist in your preparations for final assessments. However, having a balance between work and fun is extremely important so ensure that you also take time over these holidays to relax and enjoy yourself.
For all of our students, as you will not be at school for two weeks, your support structures may not be as readily available to you. With this in mind, here are some excellent resources you can utilise anytime- whether it be during school holidays or not:

Our Year 8 students are well aware that to be a musician in the 21st century, you need the technical skills to back-up your musicianship. Luckily for them, they are well versed in Soundtrap, an online music making program which allows them to be modern-day musicians. This term, students have been making an original piece of music, which uses an image of their choice as inspiration. We’re excited to share our finished products with you in the next few weeks.

SENIOR GIRLS KNOCKOUT CUP VOLLEYBALL
On Wednesday of week 7, 8 girls from years 11 and 12 headed down to Adelaide to participate in the Senior Girls Knockout Cup Volleyball finals held at Brighton High School. The girls got off to a flying start by beating Hallet Cove on a count back after the match finished 1 set all. We were then brought crashing down to earth with defeats against superior Brighton and Heathfield teams. The final game of the day saw us play Loxton for third place, where the girls put in a strong performance to defeat their local counterparts 2 sets to 1. Congratulations to all of the girls who participated on the day. Finishing as the 3rd best senior girls volleyball team in the state is quite the achievement.
Daniel Clark - Volleyball Teacher
Students studying year 8-12 English are regularly engaged in skills- based learning. This involves independent reading where students are reading to themselves or to their teacher on a regular basis. English teachers specifically target vocabulary and spelling words that relate to the learning of the text(s) being studied in class. Low stakes writing is also a skill that English students are working on during their lessons. Challenging your ability to write with accuracy, fluency and improving lesson after lesson are goals and expectations set by teachers and students. This skills based supports the units of work being studied in class and the skills are transferable to all subjects studied.

It is that time of the year again! Debating between Loxton and Renmark will occur in week 1, Term 4 this year. Year 8-12 debating will take place at Renmark High School with all debates occurring on the same day. Students look forward to showcasing their research, group work and public speaking skills on the day. We wish all the students involved the very best of luck.
Biljana Elliott - Literacy and Global Perspectives
Year 12’s will have their trial exams in their double lesson in week 1 of term 4 while all other lessons will run as normal. On Friday week 3 students will be involved in a farewell assembly and then lunch at the club/hotel. Exams run in week 4 and 5. All other year 12 students will continue to attend until they have completed their final pieces of work.
Marina Pater - Director of Operations
In our technology workshop, we are excited to share our new laser cutter for students to use. Students are keen to be trained and then use this new piece of equipment as part of their Technology course. Keep an eye out as we will share some pieces of student work in future editions, using this new equipment.
2020 ALLIANCE FRANҪAISE FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL
Our French and Spanish students in Years 9, 10 and 11 participated in a full day excursion to Adelaide this term, to attend the 2020 French Film Festival. An annual event, which usually takes place in March, we were lucky that it was re-scheduled and we were able to participate.
Renmark High School was very fortunate to view two films of our choice, ‘Les Traductuers’ and ‘La Vie Scolaire’. We were also very appreciative of the Palais Nova Cinema Complex offering our school our own private cinema.
‘La Vie Scolaire’ (School Life) followed the life of an immigrant teen attending a high school in a Parisian suburb. Our students were given some insight into life in Paris for young people, daily routine of French schools, as well as enjoying the antics of some rather entertaining teachers, especially from the PE Department.
The clear favourite film of the day according to the students, however, was ‘Les Traducteurs’ (The Translators). A thriller, featuring ten languages, including French, Spanish, Greek and Danish and Russian. Students were captivated from the opening scene and were stunned on the revelation of the perpetrator; except Alex T. who confidently declared that he had worked it out within the first 15 minutes!
Robust conversation about this film continued long into the return journey home, revisiting favourite scenes and key clues in the storyline. The realisation that the ability to speak more than one language could potentially save your life.
“I want to see it again!”
“That was brilliant”
“How many languages can they all speak?”
“They didn’t know he spoke Chinese too!”
“I want to learn more languages”
Thank you to accompanying staff on the day, Wayne Elliott and Joanna Catalano for supporting the excursion. They also enjoyed the experience and commented on the exceptional behaviour from our students who represented our school superbly.
Jasmine Sotiroulis - French & Spanish Teacher
Merino Wether Competition
On the 8th and 9th of September Renmark High School Agricultural students participated in the School Merino Wether competition held at the Adelaide Show Grounds. The Merino Wether competition is a feature event held every year in line with the Royal Adelaide Show, however due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the actual show was cancelled. This competition involved showing the best of three Merino Wethers representing each of the participating schools in a “Pen of three”. This year 37 different SA schools participated with 70 teams equalling 210 sheep. It was also the 10 year anniversary of this competition, in which Renmark High school has competed for the second year in a row.
Overall six Renmark High agricultural students had the opportunity to show our sheep at the competition; Hannah Brauer, Phoebe Holmes, Tom Berends ( all Year 9) and Deniz Durmus, Lara Brauer, Mitchell Kroemer (all Year 11). I am very proud of the students involved as they diligently worked throughout a very long day which started at 5.30 and ended at 9.30 pm. Participating students represented our school superbly and achieved a very high score for their knowledge and general etiquette in showing sheep to the judges.
Raj Singh - Agriculture Teacher
Mountain Bike Riding
During week 7, the Stage 1 Outdoor Education classes took part in their first expedition for the semester – Mountain Bike Riding. Students utilised their class time and drew on previous camping experiences to assist with the planning, while developing their skills (riding and maintenance) in preparation for the camp. The group consisted of many mountain bike enthusiasts who were often turned to for assistance. We are very fortunate to also have over 20 bikes of our own for students to utilise and become familiar with.
The trip involved students riding along various tracks in between Berri and Loxton (Katarapko/Eckerts Creek). It was a new experience riding around this area for many of the students and on behalf of the group and Renmark High School we would like to say thank you to Bob and Pam Pankhurst (from Winkie) for hosting us at their beautiful home and for taking us around various tracks on day 2.
Also a huge thanks goes to Bob, other volunteers and National Parks SA for their efforts over the past few years in tidying up the area (signage, fences, campsites) for locals and tourists to get out and enjoy.
Over the two days the students travelled approximately 70km resulting in a few tired and sore bodies. It was a great experience and there were many laughs and memories.
Grace - The trip really pushed me out of my comfort zone but it was an exciting adventure.
MacKenna - Bob was a great tour guide and showed us some amazing trails.
Renee - Sitting around the fire after a solid day, was a lot of fun and it allowed us to have a chat and laugh with all members on the camp.
Mitchell - I enjoyed taking my bike off the main track and experiencing a different area in the Riverland.
The students are now studying the many impacts on the reefs along our beautiful coastline in order to prepare for the surf trip in Term 4.

Hosted by the University of Adelaide, the 2020 ‘French Day Out’, which usually takes place on campus, was a virtual experience for our Year 10 French students this year. With the aim of promoting the university, as well as the study of French, three of the its most prominent professors of French facilitated the experience, with the focus this year on ‘The French Revolution’. Students prepared for the session prior to the day in class and were confident to participate in the live session joining hundreds of other French students from around South Australia.
A fascinating time in French history, our students were amazed to learn about the French monarchy at the time, their life of luxury and excess, compared with the majority of French citizens whose experience was vastly different.
They were also surprised to discover that the French we study today was not widely spoken in France before the revolution, which united regions across the country and forced the emergence of the language with which we are all more familiar.
During the Q and A session, a range of questions was posed to the professors about the French Revolution and studying French at Adelaide University. Our students were very interested to know if Dr John West still remembered the French teacher from Renmark High School who he taught in 1992 and they were overjoyed to hear that indeed he did!
Looking forward, we hope to be able to return to the campus in 2021 for an authentic experience and meet the professors in person.
Jasmine Sotiroulis - French and Spanish Teacher
Our students have been hard at work in STEM today. Our Year 12s have been designing calorimeters to check the efficiency of firelighters in Chemistry and investigating the effects of hormones on plant growth in Biology. Our Year 8s have been dissecting hearts as they learn about organs and body systems.
Jess Farrelly - Science Coordinator

Wow this weather is a bit of a rollercoaster, I wake up and it's cold and then when I get to school is gets warm. Today it is in fact really warm! This is spring! The really cold, cold days are slowly leaving and the warm sun is shining. The beautiful flowers are starting to bloom and everything is lovely, until it gets cold again.
Oh well roller coasters can be fun, so I will just go with it, which is often the way of life. Life will often throw us curve balls and the way we take it can either make us or break us. Just remember to stay strong, tomorrow is a brand new day and the sun is on the horizon ready to shine upon us. So enjoy this wonderful Riverland weather and remember be kind to each other and keep smiling.

INTRODUCING...
Aaron (Campo) Camplin Health & PE Coordinator
Here are some fun facts about Campo
Campo completed his teaching degree at UniSA in Mawson Lakes. He has been teaching since mid 2006 and started at Renmark High School in January of 2007.
He knew from a young age that he always wanted to do something involving sport. On weekends and in his spare time, Campo enjoys playing golf, spending time on the river and playing with his children.
As he is an avid Geelong fan, he was questioned on the number of Premierships Geelong had won. Despite his passion for the club, he was unable to say (so I did question how much of a fan he actually was, as he should know this haha!). He proudly spoke about witnessing Geelong's 2007 record breaking win against the Power.
When asked if he could live anywhere in the world, he didn't hesitate to respond that it would be anywhere near water.
