We acknowledge that Renmark High School students, staff and community live, study and work on Erawirung Land. We acknowledge the First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee as Traditional Custodians of the Riverland region and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We respect the deep connection Aboriginal people have with land, animals and waters.
We honour the Lores and customs that cross this traditional Country, the Ancestors who taught and still teach the knowledge that is embedded forever with Aboriginal people today.
2022 Riverland and Mallee Vocational Awards
The Riverland and Mallee Vocational Awards aims to promote and reward the most outstanding Apprentices, Trainees and Vocational Education and Training Students in our region. Renmark High School and the Riverland Secondary Schools Alliance have a proud history of providing successful vocational education pathways. We congratulate our nominees and finalists for the 2022 Awards.
Congratulations to our VET student finalists Grace N and Chelsea H.
Vocational Education & Training (VET) students complete training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Students undertaking a VET course gain industry specific skills that allow them to perform tasks in the workplace.
Congratulations to our School Based Apprentice nominees Nicholas T and Jamie D, and to Amy C for making the finals.
A School Based Apprenticeship allows senior secondary students to begin an apprenticeship as a part of their SACE. Through this students start vocational training, earn a wage and get hands on experience while finishing school.
Congratulations to the overall Regional Runner up, Sakina Q and to the Regional winner, Ceobahn W, both of whom are Renmark High School students!
A School Based Trainee allows senior secondary students to begin a traineeship as a part of their SACE. Through this students start vocational training, earning a wage and getting hands on experience while finishing school.
Congratulations to these students for their effort in their vocational studies and for being recognised in this way!
Teaching and Learning and COVID-19
Thank you to the staff at Renmark High School who are going above and beyond to ensure the continuity of student learning. This has included teachers taking extra reliefs and in some cases an extra subject. Support staff have been managing COVID related responses including the classroom contact letters, and the many phone calls from parents asking questions. Thank you also to students and families for your patience with more lessons than normal being covered by relief teachers. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning please don’t hesitate to contact the school.
Governing Council
We held our AGM recently and formed our 2022 Governing Council membership. Thank you to John Gardner who has served for five years on Governing Council, four of these as our chairperson. John has been a supportive advocate for our school and we thank him for his contribution to our school. Also thank you to Alysha Herrmann who also retires from Governing Council and the position of secretary, and a thank you to Deanne Flaherty who is retiring from the position of treasurer but is remaining on the council.
Welcome to our new Chairperson, Darren Bussenschutt, our new secretary Andrea Logos, our new treasurer Scerina Rasheed and new members to council Laura Strout, Kimberley Wegner and Sean Leesue, as well as continuing members Kerry Thompson, Megan Petersen, Karen DiCerbo, David Sims, Lauren Schiller, Jasmine Sotiroulis and Sally Kroemer. I look forward to working with you all during the year as we continue our journey of school improvement.
Student/Parent/Teacher Interviews
We encourage your attendance at the upcoming student/parent/teacher discussions to talk about student achievement, progress and goal setting for the remainder of the year.
Due to COVID absence of students and staff we have moved the parent teacher interviews into early next term.
Interviews are not just for students who aren't progressing as well as expected, they are an opportunity for all students and families to discuss the skill development of students. For those students who are doing well it is an opportunity to talk about the appropriate level of challenge to enable students to continue to develop their skills and understandings.
Students are able to set goals and put actions in place to improve results during the remainder of semester one. Use the online booking system (details following) to reserve your preferred time slots.
Open Day
Next Monday we have an opportunity to see our classrooms in action and walk through the learning spaces we have been developing over the last three years. The tours are of particular interest to year 5/6 students who are already thinking about what happens in the next year or two. If you have a student in year 5 or 6 and are unable to attend next Monday morning but are interested in a tour through the school, please contact us.
Student Free Day
For the first session on our recent student free day in week 7 staff were involved in professional development provided by Speech Pathologist Gretel Jericho on the skills of reading. For the rest of the day we were working on High Impact Teaching strategies in our continuing endeavour to provide high quality teaching and learning for students.

2022 ELECTED STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
At our first school assembly on Friday, March 18, Mrs Atsaves outlined what the SRC will be looking to accomplish in 2022. These accomplishments include making exterior and interior improvements to the school, designing uniforms and other pieces of clothing such as rugby jumpers and PE singlets along with running various fundraisers. The 2022 SRC representatives were also presented with their badges and a certificate.
The SRC have organised a fundraiser on the 1st of April to celebrate Harmony Day. Students will wear something orange and bring a gold coin donation to support the Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal. At the start of term 2 the SRC will hold a leadership day at the council chambers organised by Emma Warner and Stephanie Brooks. During this day we will run leadership activities. As of recently, the SRC have been meeting on a weekly basis to outline a plan of action for 2022.
- SRC Representatives
Welcome to the following SRC representatives:
For those who are not aware, we have a Learning Hub space set up within our school which can be used for a variety of reasons. The space is split into three spaces known as the Junior Learning Hub, Senior Learning Hub, and a back study area for senior students. In addition to this, we have a bathroom and a kitchenette area, for students who may not have had breakfast or do not have any recess or lunch.
The Junior Learning Hub, similar to last year, is designed to support all students and staff to deliver high quality instruction and intervention programs for students. This area is staffed in all lessons with a teacher, and students can come into the space, on direction from their teacher, for a number of reasons. Some of these may include:
- Sitting a test under supervision
- Extra time for completion of an assignment if students have been absent from school
- A quiet space for students to work on extension work provided by the class teacher
- Students to complete a variety of online literacy and numeracy intervention programs, including Lexia (literacy), Maths Online (numeracy) and BKSB (literacy and numeracy)
- Weekly English zones for students in years 7-9
- Weekly Maths zones for students in year 7
- Fortnightly Maths zones for students in year 8-9
- A place for students who need alternate timetables for social development or mental health
- The Learning Hub teacher delivering small group activities for students to improve their skills in a specific focused area, based on the class teacher recommendation, e.g. Developing comprehension skills or to improve their reading
The Learning Hub staff do not replace the role of class teachers, rather they support students to meet intended learning by designing SMARTA goals and supporting, through quality instruction, students to meet those goals.
With the Maths and English zones however, the Learning Hub Teacher does explicitly teach a group of students that lesson, based around thinking multiplicatively (Maths) and comprehension understanding (English). The zone groups that come to the Hub can vary from the very high groups, where the teacher extends the students, or a lower group, where the Teacher assists students to grasp the basic understandings.
A typical lesson in the Learning Hub often looks similar to the following: Learning Hub staff member explicitly teaching a small group of students’ literacy, in particular the concept of comprehension. Teacher and students sitting together reading and following a passage of a story, at their pace, the teacher checking for understanding and asking questions related to the text. An SSO may be watching over three students at the computers who are working through online intervention programs, one on Maths Online, and two on Lexia. There may also be two students sitting in a different space in the room working on extension work given by their class teacher. The Learning Hub teacher and SSO check in and assist with questions during the lesson.
Our Senior Learning Hub is set up differently, and is seen as a standard classroom if you were to walk into this space. The Senior Learning Hub is staffed 4 out of 7 lines with a teacher and an SSO, and each teacher has an area of expertise to teach the students to gain SACE points. This semester students are working on a variety of Stage 1 and 2 Essential English, Stage 1 and 2 Essential Maths, Research Project and Community Studies (cooking).
An extra for the Learning Hub this year is the addition of senior students using the back senior area for Academic Recovery, where students come during their study lessons, as directed by their teacher, to work on drafts that have not been submitted by the due date. We are optimistic that the quiet space gives students time to complete their work and keep up to date with due dates.
If you have any questions regarding the Learning Hubs, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the school.

Learning Hub Leader
Students in year 7 Wood Technology have created their own individualised rulers, through traditional and advanced processes. Prototype rulers were first created with MDF, which then formed the final product. Students have utilised Illustrator to etch the numbers and a graphic on the ruler.
Matt Gove - Wood Technology Teacher
Product Label Design
Following the design process as true designers, year 8 Digital Media students have worked on designing and creating a product label for a product of their own choice. Students have applied their knowledge of various Photoshop skills and techniques, their critical and creative thinking, as well as a great variety of numeracy skills in measuring and converting various units of measurements.

Digital Media Teacher
Students in year 9 Woodwork have been looking at joinery and the qualities of different woods. Students practiced over the first 2 weeks on Pine, Tasmanian Oak and Ply making finger joints. Students are now using these joints to create a tissue box holder. Using Illustrator, students are designing a lid utilising the laser engraving.
Damian McCarthy - Wood Technology Teacher
Muffins
Year 7 Food Technology students are learning about foods which are low in fat. This week students chose which muffins they wanted to make. Some made banana and oat muffins while others made apple and cinnamon muffins. Students have become familiar with working in the school’s kitchens and are doing very well.

Renmark High School is excited to showcase the new addition to our athletics sports singlets.
Thank you and well done to Daniel Giles, Kerrie Pyers and all of the RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) Committee on organising and designing the logo which is also located around the school on each building.
We believe that in order for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to lead successful and fulfilling lives they have to walk, live and work within a balance of 2 worlds. A strong connection to their culture and value for their education is vital.
The logo represents the River Murray, where most of our students live and spend their time, and like the river there are many waves in life that can knock you back but it just keeps on flowing.
Our students continue to rise each morning, just like our strong leaders who continue to rise day after day. The 2 circles of life represent young Aboriginal students as they build and strengthen their culture while coming to school.
All students thrive while respecting the 5 core Renmark High School values – trust, respect, responsibility, accountability, fun.
Each Wednesday our Senior Learning Hub students demonstrate their skills in the kitchen for their Community Connections subject. This term we have cooked; meringues, brownies, breakfast burgers and pancakes. This week students worked together to create scones and sausages rolls.

Year 7 Music – conductor workshop
Our year 7 Music class worked with instrumental teacher Miss Roberts on their conductor skills. Students learnt how to be a conductor, how to control the beat and tempo of an orchestra (of students) and raise and lower the volume while keeping a beat. Below are some student experiences of this workshop:
“It was good to be a conductor because I was out the front teaching people. I went okay and was able to change the volume to low and high when I raised my hands.” -Katerina C.
“It was easy to learn the conducting skills when it was only one hand. When I had to use two it was more difficult because I had to do it at the same time.” -Declan B.
“I liked learning to be a conductor because I felt like I was a teacher, and I could teach the class. I felt important when I could control the class and people had to follow along.” -Ali U.
“It was intimidating being a conductor because I had to control everyone. I had to make sure that everyone was listening to me and understood what I asked them to do.” -Jemma O.

Plant Based Foods- Fruit Crumble & Vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie
Year 9 Food Technology students have based their cooking practicals around plant based foods this term. They have learnt about what a plant based diet is, it's health benefits and the differences between vegetarians and vegans.
Over the past few weeks students have made a vegetarian shepherd’s pie as well as a fruit crumble topped with coconut cream and ice cream.
The students have enjoyed cooking and are always keen to try different types of foods.

2022 RHS Sports Day
One of the highlights of the school calendar is the sports carnival which fortunately we were able to run on Friday of week 7. Even with students/families impacted by Covid, there was still plenty of colour, support, excitement, competition and sportsmanship across the day.
As always, there were many highlights, PB’s and individuals stepping up and assisting their house and captains to ensure as many events were filled. Regular score updates announced over the PA system highlighted that every single event was vital. The end result once again being determined by the last few relays.
Chaffey claimed the Championship Shield once again from an improved Sturt.
Congratulations to Bailey W and Phoebe H who both set new records along with students who just fell short.
Bailey W: U16 1500m – 4:27.06 (2022) – 24 year record
Phoebe H: U16 discus – 27.37m (2022) – 25 year record

Thank you to our sponsors for your continued support and to the staff and students for your efforts.
Students had been training during their lunch breaks and were excited to represent Renmark High School at the Interschool Athletics event. Unfortunately this event has recently been cancelled.

CNS HQ is now a dedicated Telehealth OT service. We know that for many people face to face OT is the best option, but we also know that for so many Riverland families there are not enough OTs to see everyone, and a lot are on very long waitlists. That is why we have opened up our dedicated Telehealth OT service!
We currently are taking on new clients and do not have a waitlist!
Here are some ways that Telehealth can be useful when face to face OT therapy is not available:
- We can assist parents with strategies to help their child staying calm and dealing with big emotions
- We can work on many developmental skills such as fine and gross motor skills, social development, and turn taking
- We can provide parent support and mentoring
- We can help design and setup the home to make it more sensory friendly and even help setup an 'OT space'
- And much much more!
