We acknowledge that Renmark High School students, staff and community live, study and work on Erawirung Land. We acknowledge the First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee as Traditional Custodians of the Riverland region and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We respect the deep connection Aboriginal people have with land, animals and waters.
We honour the Lores and customs that cross this traditional Country, the Ancestors who taught and still teach the knowledge that is embedded forever with Aboriginal people today.
Welcome to the start of the 2022 school year. A special welcome to our new students and their families, especially to those who have joined us for the beginning of their secondary schooling journey. It has been fantastic to welcome the new Year 7 and 8 students for the last two weeks and now the Year 9, 10 and 11s as they return to face to face classes this week. Year 12 students have also been back and we wish them well for a successful final year of schooling.
Thank you for the support from our families as we made an unusual start to the year, whether it was supporting students returning in unusual circumstances or to those who were supporting students learning from home, and in many cases, a combination of both! Teachers have worked hard preparing for students at all year levels and I thank them for their efforts in providing quality teaching and learning for both face to face and online learning.
With the addition of Year 7s and with some staff on leave; Kay Heuzenroeder for the year, Biljana Elliott and Wayne Elliott for Term 1, we welcome a number of new staff to our team.
Welcome to ancillary staff members Sarah Parkyn (Student Inclusion Officer), Leanne Rathbone and Hannah Baker (classroom support), Chloe Shorrock (an additional ASETO with Daniel Giles) and to Maria Dowzard (Pastoral Care Worker).
We also welcome a number of new teaching staff including Jeremy Blackwell (Maths & Science), Kardinia Caputo (English & HASS), Samuel Birchard (English & HASS), Ting Sun (Maths), Michael Singh (HPE, English & HASS), Chris Blanden (Maths & Science), Kiran James (HASS & English), Erin Pick (English & HASS) and Nathan Phillips (Maths & HASS).
Congratulations also to Jasmine Sotiroulis who is the Literacy and Global Perspectives leader for Term 1.
Please remember our COVID safe protocols (including staying home if students are unwell). I am really looking forward for us to be able to welcome parents and community members back into our school when restrictions ease. It will be great for parents to meet our new staff and to check out our ever-evolving school environment, including our welcoming circle fire pit just inside the entrance of the school that was completed in the holidays, and our agility course on the mound which is due to be finished today.
Some Reminders:
- The standard of the uniform has been terrific on our return to the school, please keep this up.
- Attendance by students is an important factor in their success at school. The beginning of the year is a great time to set in place the habit of being at school on time each and every school day.
- Students are not permitted to leave the school to go down the street during the day. This is in the interests of the safety and wellbeing of our students. Students who truant from school (or from school off-site activities) put at risk their ability to participate in opportunities such as excursions and camps.
- DAYMAP is an important method of communication with families and we encourage all parents and guardians to make use of this service. Instructions on accessing the DAYMAP program are attached to this newsletter, are available on our Facebook page and can be collected from the front office.
This year our newsletters will again be issued every three weeks and we encourage you to access them electronically from the schoolszine app.
I am looking forward to working with students, staff, families and our community as we continue to make our fantastic school even better throughout this year!

RENMARK HIGH SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER - ALICIA
Hi students, parents, and caregivers,
For those who don’t know me, I am Alicia, the Social Worker here at Renmark High School. I am available to support students and families throughout the year on issues concerning mental health, friendship/relationship issues and any other worries or concerns. I am also able to connect students and families with external services.
Students can book appointments with me in the Student Services Office, or I can be contacted via Daymap, via phone on 8586 6974 or email, alicia.thackray687@schools.sa.edu.au.
This week in Science, Year 7 students have been learning about safety rules in the laboratory. During this lesson, the students successfully earnt their Bunsen burner license.
They were able to:
-set up the apparatus correctly
-safely light a Bunsen burner
-change between the safety and heating flame
-heat liquid in a test tube
-turn off the Bunsen burner from the gas taps.
Ms Blanden - Science Teacher
As an introduction to Science, Mr Blackwell’s class got the opportunity to operate Bunsen burners. While these can reach a temperature of 1,500o C, they are a safe and effective piece of equipment used by scientists. One such application is to catalyse reactions, which is what they were successful in completing last week.

RAINBOW SALAD
On Tuesday, 8th February the Year 7 Food Tech class experienced their first practical lesson, making a Rainbow Salad. Students were able to enjoy having a little mask free time whilst they worked outside and what gorgeous weather it was for it.
I made a Rainbow Salad containing tomatoes, lettuce, corn, beetroot, carrots, cucumber and dressing. A rainbow salad is a salad with vegetables of different colours. It was fun making the salad. Abdullah.
The skills I learnt were how to use a knife safely, how to be safe in the kitchen, how to dice tomatoes and other vegetables and how to make a dressing for the salad. Nakeisha
I enjoyed working independently while making a salad and I enjoyed working outside. Zoey.

Music & Maths
Our Year 7s have shown some their ability to read music notes with the help of their mathematical skills. In our Tuesday’s class, students learnt the four types of notes we use to read music, and their length value. Students were keen to observe that the notes grew smaller in length when divided by half. They made note pyramids from card to help visualise this concept and when our in-class competition took place, students were able to arrange these notes in various combinations to equal the number 4: the length of a 4/4 bar of music.
Alistair Ward - Music teacher
Year 8 Performing Arts
Our Year 8s have been worked on playing rhythmic patterns in their Performing Arts class. Students are learning to read and write graphic notation, by demonstrating the beats, pulse and rhythm in a visual form. Over the next few weeks students will start layering music using pitched instruments and create a graphical representation of music that they can perform in front of their class.
Kiran James - Performing Arts Teacher
Students are completing preliminary work for their Abstract Monochromatic Painting. Different colour schemes and how to show visual texture are being explored.

Education Perfect ANZ Maths Championships 2021
In 2021, three Renmark High School students entered and competed in the Education Perfect ANZ Online Maths Championships. With 95000 competitors from around the globe, all three of our students placed in the top 10% of entrants. As a result of their efforts in the competition, Renmark High School consequently placed 11th out of 80 schools in South Australia and 4th out of 62 schools in our category of 51-100 students nationwide. Certificates to acknowledge these students arrived after our final assemblies in Term 4, and were presented to them this week on their return to school. Congratulations, Sakina Q, Oz F and Jorja K! We look forward to seeing even more Renmark High School students competing in the Education Perfect Maths Championships in 2022.
