SSO week – Thank you
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Renmark High School community to thank our ancillary staff for all of the fantastic work that they do. Thank you to Sonja Modlinski, Stacey Lambert, Tracey Chapman, Carli Burnnard, Karina Lambert, Melek Demir, Ashlea James, Tara Camilleri, Anthony Rothe, Tom Gregurec, Brett Blackwell, Veronica Crouch, Kerrie Pyers, Kathryn Jenner, Samps Okholm, Patricia Rucioch, Leanne Weigall, Erin Rossack, Joane Smith & Rhett Colls.
Student Learning at RHS
The future direction of student education was presented during the Secondary Schools Principals Conference I went to recently really reinforced the great work of RHS staff. The theme was Beyond Certainty and reinforced the idea that an important role of schools is to develop the skills in our young people that will enable them to be successful beyond their time at school. Listening to speakers and participating in the workshops allowed me to reflect on the amazing things that are already happening in our school for students. I will share some more details in future newsletters however in the meantime I would like to recognise our staff’s fantastic efforts in our school improvement work in General Capabilities, developing metacognition in students, STEM, and digital technologies, I look forward to our continued success developing the learning environment for our students.
Wear it Purple Day this Friday
I am proud of our positive, inclusive culture at Renmark High School, where students and staff are accepting of all young people into our learning community. As a recognition of all students having the right to be of our community SRC in conjunction with our wellbeing team are supporting Wear it Purple day this Friday. Wear it Purple Day is an annual LGBTIQA+ awareness day especially for young people, based in Australia. Supporters wear purple to celebrate diversity and young people from the LGBTIQA+ community. AG FEATURE IN ROYAL ADELAIDE SHOW MAGAZINE
We are really excited to learn that Renmark High School has recently been successful to receive a $2000 scholarship from Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia. This scholarship enables four of our students to attend and compete in Schools Merino Wethers competition in 2019. This year will be a special year for the competition, with Rabobank sponsoring the School Merino Wethers as a feature event.
It was also great to see our school featured in the recent Royal Adelaide Show and Royal Society Magazines.
As a part of the Agriculture Curriculum, a group of students from Year 9 and 10 will participate in the Merino Wether competition, taking 3 Merino Wethers for the showing. Year 10 Agriculture students Danielle Leonard and Indya Wittwer also featured in the article for their involvement in the school wether competition. Raj Singh - AG Teacher
Sixteen Renmark High School language students volunteered to put their language skills to the test for touring groups of Year 7 students and their families on our recent ‘Expo Night’. Representing France, Spain and Greece, competition was fierce amongst the students for the duration of the evening. Greece lead the way for the most of the competition and students were confident of a win.
However, as the competition drew to a close, France clocked up some fast points, eventually taking out the title.
Many thanks to our students for giving up their time to be a part of the ‘Expo Night’ and representing our school in such a positive way.
Congratulations to Wade Coombs and George Hajis placing second and third respectively on the night and to Wyatt Neef for his superb performance taking out first place.
Jasmine Tassios - French & Spanish Teacher

IN YEAR 8 DRAMA - INDIGENOUS STORIES
Students have focused their learning on set, lighting and sound design with the intention of creating a story based on the traditions and messages found in indigenous stories.
Some of the creative scripts that the students wrote were about how the sun was made, how the Murray River got its colour, how the zebra got its stripes and how the waterfalls began. These were then performed in the Drama Room.
Photos are of students set designs and performances.
Wendy Matulic - Drama Teacher

There are still a number of 2018 school magazines that are yet to be collected. If you have ordered and paid for one please see Carli in Student Services to collect it as soon as possible.

On Wednesday the 14th of August six teams of keen mathematicians made the trip to Loxton for the annual MASA quiz night. This event involves teams of four students answering a range of general knowledge, mathematics and problems solving questions, competing against teams from Loxton and Glossop High schools. Our teams represented the school exceptionally well, combining answering as many questions as they could with consuming pizza and other assorted snacks. A special mention must be made of our Year 8 team who were competing against not only Year 8’s but Year 9 and 10 teams as well, winning the Best Mathematics award for this section. Congratulations to all students involved for their effort and for making the night such an enjoyable experience for all
Junior 'Best Mathematics' team members, Lachlan, Stephanie Sakina and Tyrone.
Michael Young - Maths Coordinator
On Friday the 9th August Desmond Chester and Joshua Goody along with the Riverland SAASTA Academy attended an AFLX workshop in Adelaide. The morning activity took place at the Adelaide Crows training facility led by Andrew McLeod and his team who took everyone on a tour followed by an info session and quiz.
After a BBQ lunch we travelled to AFL MAX near the airport where students participated in a variety of exercises including rock climbing, interactive wall, trampoline dodgeball, accuracy kicking, inflatable obstacles, 10m sprint and VR room.
The day was very informative and interactive and everyone enjoyed the trip.

School Sport SA Cross Country
Congratulations and all the best to Taj Saatze, Baily White and Isabella Cant on being selected for the SA Cross Country team. The group will take off on Friday (week 5) to compete in NSW, against runners from across Australia. All of the hard work and dedication has paid off. Enjoy the experience.

School Sport SA Swimming
Earlier this term Dylan travelled to Melbourne as part of the School Sport SA Swimming team. Dylan had a very successful start to the year at the many school events (RHS Interschool and Adelaide swimming) and for Renmark Vitor Swimming Club.
Dylan juggled his other commitments (Football with West Adelaide and Renmark) to ensure he was getting enough training in before the event. Dylan finished 4th in the 50m Freestyle heats and in the final he finished 6th (6th in Australia). He then backed this up and finished 14th in the 50m Butterfly.
Congratulations Dylan and we look forward to seeing you have continued success in 2020.

Local Sports
Good luck to everyone who will be taking part in their local sport/s over the next few weeks.

Subject Selections are very important
It is that time of year when students are considering their goals and deciding on what subjects they wish to study for the following year. To support this process we have been faciliting events for students and families.
Throughout week 4 we presented you with our EXPO Night and in week 5 we invited students and parents to attend our subject counselling. These sessions were designed to give students a clear understanding of what is expected in each subject, and exposure to relevant employment pathways related to the subject.
If you were unable to attend these events, please ensure to speak with your child and discuss their options. All signed subject choices to be returned by Friday 6th September to your child's caregroup teacher.

Last week we welcomed 100 Year 7’s for a series of transition lessons. Our Year 7’s had the opportunity to engage in a variety of lessons including Art, Home Economics, Physical Education, Music and Drumbeat, STEM and Digital Media that were developed and facilitated by the transition team comprising of both the Primary and High School teachers.
Our staff were very impressed by the positive and confident interactions the Year 7s had with members of our school. I’d like to say a big thank you to the teachers involved in delivering the transition lessons and to the students who came along with enthusiasm and respect.
We are all looking forward to getting to know the students as they continue through the transition process. In the coming weeks, we will visit the Primary Schools with former students to talk with the Year 7s about their Renmark High School experience.
Tamara Hooper – Student Inclusion
We encourage all Year 7 families to return their enrolment forms to either the high school front office or to your primary school by Friday 6th September.
Stacey Lambert - Administration
Hello everyone, I do hope that this newsletter finds you all well and not bogged down with colds as so many have been. I got up early this morning as I do a hot cooked breakfast on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and this morning it was so cold. I put my apron on at the BBQ at school and looked twice my size as I had so many clothes on. It didn’t take long to warm up as my helpers, Matt, Suzie and Kohen and I got going.
These students do such a great job, coming in early and spending their time cooking breakfast for their peers. I applaud them for their commitment and their attitude, always happy and helpful. We also did a BBQ at the recent school Expo and cooked 200 sausages, which were all eaten.
It was an excellent evening and was really well attended, with everyone gaining a lot of information which will most certainly be helpful for next year.
Have a wonderful week and keep smiling. Remember that a kind word turns away anger. Until next time …Pammy
