Congratulations to our Renmark High School Swimmers! Renmark High School took out the title two weeks ago at our local Riverland High Schools interschool competition. Last night, the Renmark High School team took out the Adelaide School Sport SA C grade 2021 Championship shield! Well done on a fantastic effort!
SRC assembly
Congratulations to our new SRC members who were presented with their badges on Friday. The upcoming leadership day will allow priorities to be set for the year. This year will include opportunities to develop our new vision and values, an outdoor play-space, continue our building renaming project, and look at the transition of Year 7 to High School. Well done on being recognised by your peers for your leadership potential and I look forward to working with you all this year.

YEAR 6/7 TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION
Renmark High School staff are busy planning for the move of Year 7's into high school. We are continuing to upgrade our facilities, ensuring we have high quality learning spaces for all our students, including areas of the yard for our year 7s. Staff from across all of our primary schools and high school are regularly meeting and attending professional development to ensure continuity of learning for all our region’s middle school students. Transition planning is also underway, this week Amy Evans met with Renee Smith from Renmark Primary School to confirm our transition program for both year 6 and 7s, which will start in Term 2.

Aboriginal learning styles creating strong connection to culture, future pathways in Renmark classrooms

Traditional learning styles and connections to culture are being forged in one regional South Australian classroom, giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the Riverland a chance to walk in two worlds, under the guidance of local elders.
Renmark High School's Strong Futures program is also open to non-Aboriginal students and covers a different topic each week that complements the school curriculum and invites local Aboriginal people to tell their stories of success.
Aboriginal secondary education transition officer Daniel Giles was behind the tailored program, which involves teaching one double lesson a week alongside local elder Uncle Barney Lindsay, and said it grows strong future pathways for the local youth.
"It covers a range of things, from English to maths to HASS [humanities and social sciences], getting the students to produce a variety of work in each lesson," he said.
"The basic idea was to build on the [students'] strong foundation of education and a strong sense of cultural identity.
Key points:
- A regional high school is bringing traditional Aboriginal learning styles into a classroom setting
- One of the program leaders says it's increasing student engagement
- Year 12 participant Andrew Giles says it's allowing him to connect back to culture
"The basic idea was to build on the [students'] strong foundation of education and a strong sense of cultural identity.
"This year we've had a significant increase in participants.
"It has definitely increased engagement and attendance with a lot of our students."
Student confidence climbs
Around 10 per cent of Renmark High School's approximately 500 students identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and were behind the push to create a class where traditional knowledge and learning is valued.
Art as expression identity is encouraged, which Andrew Lindsay says has helped to build his confidence.(ABC Riverland: Anita Ward)
For year 12 student Andrew Lindsay, having participated in the Strong Futures program last year and taking it on again this year, has pushed him to aim for an apprenticeship in the construction industry once his schooling is complete.
"It has been good, Daniel has helped me to get my points up for SACE and my confidence in talking to people has been boosted," he said.
"I reckon it's important because most people are forgetting about their culture and where they're from.
"Doing this [program] here … it's pointing them in the right direction."
Deputy principal and director of inclusion Amy Evans said the program is a point of pride for the school as it creates real outcomes for participating students.
All students are welcome in the Strong Futures program, which passes on cultural knowledge and traditional Aboriginal learning styles.(ABC Riverland: Anita Ward)
"With our older students, we've been able to offer some SACE accreditation in the program in Aboriginal studies and in integrated learning," she said.
Mr Giles said at the heart of each lesson was the desire to keep community connections strong and pass on ancient knowledge.
"It's open to everyone because we've noticed a lot of non-Aboriginal students do relate to the way we have our teaching styles," he said.
"Tuesday bus runs are usually pretty full when we have the Strong Futures program, so it's great to see."
Thank you to ABC Riverland for allowing us to share their story.
Hi everybody! So much has been happening over the last few weeks, what an exciting time it has been. So, I will start with the Year 8 Aquatics Camp. Firstly, the weather was absolutely the best the Riverland could offer, not too hot and not too cold, although a little bit windy at times. The camp was one of the best I have attended (and I have been to a few), with all the students interacting so well with each other.
One of the highlights for me was being out with the students water skiing. There was one young lad, Blake who had never ever skied before and he just got straight up and off he went. I could not believe what I was seeing! The instructor (Sue) and I just looked at each other in awe! Following success from other students in the group, Blake was keen to have a go on one ski. First attemp, up and he was away and he didn’t fall off. I think he fell in love with skiing then and there.
Sue and I were just rapt and I said to her that our students are all truly talented each in their own way.
We have a diverse group of young people here at Renmark High who I believe, will make a make our world a better place. Thank you for the privilege of being a small part of it all.
Keep smiling and let's applaud our young people in all they do. Cheers, Pammy.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
Student Representative Council 2021
During Beyond Tomorrow on Friday week 5, we introduced our new Student Representative Council to the school during an assembly. Our leadership team will meet throughout the year to discuss school improvements and organise fundraising events. SRC are responsible for feeding back information to their year levels and taking on board feedback from students to guide school improvement. Our SRC prefects are responsible for running assemblies and other school events throughout the year. Under the guidance of Ms Stanojevic, Ms Atsaves, Ms Schiller and Mr Owens the SRC are hoping for a successful and productive 2021.
Year 10 Agriculture students visited Angoves Winery this week. With senior winemaker Mr Paul Kernich. Students looked at the various processes involved in wine making including crushing, fermentation, bottling and the labelling of wine. Paul described the OHS requirements of the wine industry and shared his knowledge in technological advances in wine making. Impressed by the enthusiasm shown by the Renmark High students, he generously answered a wide range of questions around wine making in general and pontential work experience opportunities for students at the winery. A huge thank you to Angoves Winery and Paul Kernich who give us unprecedented access to the processes involved in the making of wine. A great learning opportunity greatly appreciated by our students.
SA SCHOOL SWIMMING - AQUATIC TEAM
On Monday 1st March our Adelaide Swimming Team travelled to the SA Aquatic Centre to compete in C Grade for the 2021 School Sport SA Championships. The day was a huge success with Renmark winning the combined boys and girls Championship Shield, the girls Championship Shield and placing second in the boys Championship Shield. The small but dedicated team did Renmark High School proud in the support they provided each other, with many swimmers competing in multiple events back to back. Congratulations to you all on this incredible achievement! Thank you to Sue Lyons, Sophie H and Tina B who assisted with time-keeping duties.
School Sport SA Triathlon
As in previous years, term 1 is quite busy with swimming and athletics, along with the opportunity to participate in the School Sport SA Triathlon event held in Adelaide (West Lakes). This year, Renmark High School entered 12 students (4 teams) who put their hand up for the challenge in warm conditions. Fortunately, the organisers made the decision to shorten the ride and the run as it continued to get warmer.
Earlier in the day, Bailey competed as an individual in the State trial. As always, he put in a huge effort against some of South Australia's top triathletes finishing in 3rd place overall. Well done, Bailey and all the best in September representing the state in Hervey Bay (Queensland).
Once the individual events concluded, it was time for our team events. Our teams consisted of;
Team 1: Maddy, Tiana and Jenna (5th)
Team 2: Jordan, Bailey and Jordan (5th)
Team 3: Zac, Ayden and James (9th)
Team 4: Charlie, Samuel and Lucas (6th)
All students demonstrated excellent althletic skills, battled hard and also had an enjoyable day. We look forward to involving more students in 2022 and compete in the individual and team events. Thank you to this year's competition for your committment and to Liz Beech for volunteering her time and assisting with the day.
Interschool Swimming Success
After a successful Renmark High School Swimming Carnival, Jodi, Karina and the PE staff analysed the results and selected a team to face up against the other Riverland High Schools. The team was quite young (with only one Year 12 student and six Year 11’s) but they were ready to put in a huge team effort to try and claim back the Championship Shield for 2021.
The students selected for the evening event, were all honoured and proud to represent the Renmark High School. This was demonstrated through their committment to their events throughout the evening with minimal changes required.
A great night supported by staff, many parents and family. Ultimately, all team members stepped up pushing as hard as they could, filling every event.
Students, staff and spectators remained anxious throughout the night despite the announcement of positive results score updates given. The team knew however that the job wasn’t done, as we still had the relays to go.
At the presentations, it was announced that Renmark High School had won 5 out of the possible 8 age group pennants (U14 boys, U15 boys, U20 boys, U16 girls and U20 girls) Nervously Renmark High School were announced 2021 Champions. (Renmark 832, Glossop 737, Loxton 723 and Waikerie 556). Well done also to Glossop High School, who were awarded Most Improved Shield.
A big thank you to the spectators for coming and supporting our students, Jodi and Karina (Coaches), Renmark Vitor Swimming Club, Peter Safralidis/Grant Fisher and the Loxton Staff for hosting the event, and our swimming team. All the best in Adelaide in week 6. GO RENMARK.
Athletics 1500m and 800m Finals
As the swimming is coming to an end, we begin to turn our focus to athletics. Students have been participating in various events during Physical Education lessons and lunch time trainings begin soon. Students had the opportunity to nominate for events at the assembly on Friday of Week 5. Any students absent on the day and would like to nominate please see Mr Camplin or a PE staff member.
In the coming week House Captains will be conducting trials to assist them in selecting their team. We encourage students to support their house captains and get involved to ensure that every event is filled. Sports Day is a great event and we look forward to seeing as many students Sports Day participate.
Stage 1 & 2 Outdoor Education
Outdoor Education classes at Stage 1 (canoe) and Stage 2 (kayak) have been preparing for their expeditions which will be held later this term. Students are looking forward to getting outside and away from the daily stressors, as well as enjoying some time with their peers in our beautiful surroundings.
Stage 2 Kayak Expedition – Week 8 (Tuesday 16th March – Thursday 18th March)
Stage 1 Canoe Expedition – Week 9 (Wednesday 24th March – Friday 26th March)

Year 11 student Kira Watts has been successful in her application for a Department for Education STEM Scholarship. The scholarship is designed to support students who wish to study and pursue a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related fields. The funding will provide significant financial support towards mentoring, tutoring costs, textbooks, relevant excursions and laptops throughout years 11 and 12. On Tuesday the 16th of February, Kira attended an award ceremony and information session held at the University of Adelaide with other successful applicants from across the state.
Kira’s application demonstrated that she is a worthy recipient. She is a passionate, dedicated student who shows a natural curiosity toward all of her studies. We wish her all the best across the next two years of study with us at Renmark High School and her future studies.

Last Monday night, from 8pm-9.30pm, our young Renmark High School photographers had the opportunity to learn about long exposure photography by attending a workshop on Light Painting, led by local photographer Chad Vigar. Students built on their knowledge of using shutter speed, aperture and ISO and had the opportunity to learn how to take long exposure photographs by using a great variety of props and tools that Chad uses whilst light painting. The photographs taken are incredible, enjoy!
Mrs Atsaves, Photography teacher
The year 9 Digital Media class has worked through a series of complex skills tasks in Photoshop this term. They have applied the new techniques they have learned to create a series of creative and professional product labels.

Our young artists have just created a ceramic tile that reflects their identity. They learned about the process of manipulating clay with the use of various tools and how texture and form play a role in creating a unique ceramic piece of artwork. Have a look at our wonderful creations; I’m sure you’ll find something wonderful in their artworks.

The Year 10 and 11 French students have been studying the French tradition of the ‘Epiphanie’ which takes place during the month of January. Historically, a religious festival, these days the French enjoy the experience of eating a ‘Galette des Rois’( Kings’ Cake) to celebrate the time of the year. Common place in all French bakeries, our class galette was homemade following a traditional recipe. A frangipane filled pastry, the tradition is that the cake is cut into pieces, enough for each person at the table plus an ‘extra’ for a passer-by. In one of the pieces, a ‘fêve’ or charm is hidden. The one who discovers the charm is crowned king or queen. Waiting eagerly for their piece, the French students carefully took bites out of their portion, hoping to find the charm and earn the crown. There can only be one winner, however and this year, it was Year 10 French student, Alex T. Bravo!
Jasmine Sotiroulis - French Teacher
Year 9 science classes are studying the transfer of energy this term. We are currently focusing on thermal energy and are investigating conduction, convection and radiation as methods of thermal energy moving between objects. Today, we used potassium permanganate crystals to observe convection currents in water.

In Week 3, all our Year 8 students travelled to Camp Kedron for the Year 8 Camp. The experience is a positive way for students to begin secondary school, get to know their teachers and make new friends. During the camp, students participated in aquatics activities at Lake Bonney Yacht Club, where they had the opportunity to try a number of water based sports including wind surfing, canoeing and sailing. One of the highlights was seeing so many of our students get up on skis and try knee boarding.
When at the campsite, students participated in Care Group activities focused around building relationships with their peers. Care Group teachers all led activities which included, volleyball, sports day ball games, art, a STEM scavenger hunt and building activity and a walk.
Have a look at the photos to see the range of activities!
